Microbial Communities and Nitrogen-Utilizing Bacteria of Rotating Biological Contactors and Activated Sludge Treating Public Sewage and Night Soil/Johkasou Sludge

چکیده

The public sewage (PS) and night soil mixed with johkasou sludge (JO) have similar chemical compositions; however, the concentrations of organic matter nitrogen compounds were different. We investigated microbial community rotating biological contactor (RBC) units treating PS JO, in which RBC was submerged liquor activated sludge. Here, we observed that compositions at phylum class levels between PS-RBC JO-RBC, whereas relative abundances several phyla (Euryarchaeota, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Patescibacteria, Betaproteobacteria) significantly differed them. composition (an attached growth process) to (a suspended process). likely affected RBC. abundance total denitrifying bacteria twice as much while nitrifying bacterial phylotypes had a abundance. predominant genera different well cross-sectional layers PS-RBC, suggesting functional diversity inhabiting

Microbial Ecology of Activated Sludge. I. Dominant Bacteria.

Over 300 bacterial strains were isolated from seven samples of activated sludge by plating on sewage agar. Gram-negative bacteria of the genera Zoogloea and Comamonas predominated. Many isolates (51%) showed sudanophilic inclusions of poly-beta-hydroxybutyric acid, whereas 34% accumulated iodophilic material on media containing starch. A large number required either vitamins or amino acids, or ...

Isolation and Identification of Anionic Surfactant Degrading Bacteria from Activated Sludge

Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LABS) is an anionic surfactant widely used all over the world. They will eventually end-up and accumulate in household or industrial sewage. Due to their high foaming capabilities which can cause numerous problems in sewage treatment facilities as well as direct toxic effects on many different organisms in ecosystem they are generally considered as serious polluta...

Biodegradation of Lignocelluloses in Sewage Sludge Composting and Vermicomposting

Aims of the Study: The aim of this study was to determine the amount of lignin degradation and biodegradation of organic matter and change of biomass under compost and vermicomposting of sewage sludge. Materials & Methods: Sawdust was added to sewage sludge at 1:3 weight bases to Carbon to Nitrogen ratio of 25:1 for composting or vermicomposting. Lignin and volatile solids were deter...

The Intensification of Sewage Sludge Anaerobic Digestion by Partial Disintegration of Surplus Activated Sludge and Foam

Large quantities of sludge are produced in biological wastewater treatment. Sludge has a high putrescibility and therefore has to be stabilizsed in order to enable an environmentally safe utilization or disposal. The anaerobic digestion is the standard technique to stabilize the sludge. Digestion produces biogas and reduces the amount of organic matter. The amount of excess sludge production fr...

Removal mechanisms and kinetics of trace tetracycline by two types of activated sludge treating freshwater sewage and saline sewage

Understanding the removal mechanisms and kinetics of trace tetracycline by activated sludge is critical to both evaluation of tetracycline elimination in sewage treatment plants and risk assessment/management of tetracycline released to soil environment due to the application of biosolids as fertilizer. Adsorption is found to be the primary removal mechanism while biodegradation, volatilization...
